Flexible working - the right to ask

03 April 2024Employees seeking a better balance between the demands of work and personal life may seek a change in their working arrangements – for example, through part-time working, job-sharing or a change in working hours. While there is no right to insist on working in a different way, there is a statutory right to ask for a flexible working arrangement and to have that request seriously considered.

Taxation of payments in lieu of notice

03 April 2024All payments in lieu of notice (PILONs) are subject to income tax and national insurance contributions (NICs) in full. The relevant rules are quite complex, as they require employers to calculate the employee’s post-employment notice pay before deducting tax and NICs. Update: Sponsor Management System outage immediately ahead of work route salary rises
02 April 2024Update (2 April 2024): The Home Office is switching off the Sponsor Management System (SMS) from 19:00 on 3 April 2024 until 9:00 on 5 April 2024. The planned system outage was previously due to take place from 19:00 on 2 April until 9:00 on 4 April 2024. The delay gives sponsors one more day to issue Certificates of Sponsorship (CoS) before salary threshold rises take effect for work routes from 4 April 2024.

European Media Freedom Act incoming
28 March 2024The European Commission expressed concerns about the independence of the media in some member states. It identified worrying trends, including increased interference in editorial decisions and challenges in providing quality media services. There were also barriers to cross-border operation and a lack of transparency in certain areas. As a result, in September 2022, the Commission proposed the European Media Freedom Act (the ‘Act’).

Asos, Boohoo and George promise 'clear and accurate' eco-claims - Geraint Lloyd-Taylor comments for the BBC

European Commission proposes significant revisions to the European Works Council Directive
