The new bill, which passed its second reading in the House of Commons on October 22nd, introduced obligatory checks to be carried out by landlords and doctors ensuring the legally approved immigration status of their tenants and patients, making it harder for illegal immigrants to obtain bank accounts and driving licences and crack down harder on sham marriages.
Joanna goes on to discuss how immigrants may respond by claiming that their human rights have been violated, which could trigger costly judicial reviews.
