Government to pay bonus for retaining furloughed workers
05 October 2020The Chancellor has announced a new job retention bonus as part of its Plan for Jobs 2020. Employers who bring workers back from furlough and retain them in employment until the end of January 2021 will qualify for a £1,000 bonus payable after 15 February 2021. Further guidance on the scheme was published on 31 July and 2 October.

MAC publishes report recommending expanded shortage occupation lists
07 October 2020The Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) has recommended a significant expansion of the occupations deemed to be in shortage for the purposes of sponsorship under the new Skilled Worker category, which will replace Tier 2 (General) from 1 January 2021. The Home Office will now need to consider the recommendations and finalise the Immigration Rules for Skilled Workers.

Pandemic right to work check procedures

Skilled Worker visa provides new options for foreign workers
22 January 2021Under the new immigration system launched on 1 December 2020, the Skilled Worker route has replaced Tier 2 (General). Benefits for employers include fewer restrictions on switching into the Skilled Worker visa from within the UK; lowering the skills threshold to RQF Level 3; reduced salary thresholds and removal of the Resident Labour Market Test. England introduces quarantine hotels and further post-arrival COVID-19 testing
12 February 2021From 15 February 2021, international arrivals to England will be required to quarantine in a government-managed hotel if, within the ten days before arrival, they have been in or transited a country to which a travel ban applies (‘red list countries’). Additional post-arrival COVID-19 testing has been mandated from the same date. A raft of sanctions will also apply for non-compliance.
