Free trade and controlling free movement - can the UK and the EU square the circle?

Much is being written about Brexit these days, but what are the possible options for the UK and the EU to reach a compromise on the issue of free movement of people allowing the UK to continue to participate in the European Single Market and the EU Customs Union?
In this in-depth report, James Davies, Natasha Hotson and Lauren Stone of Lewis Silkin LLP conclude that the best prospect is for the parties to reach a transitional agreement, using the existing European Economic Area agreement as a template. This would potentially enable the UK to employ “safeguard measures” to control EU migration and the UK could then seek to negotiate a more complex, bespoke trading agreement with the EU in the longer term.
