British Athletes Commission and Lewis Silkin launch exclusive legal partnership

31 January 2014

Leading law firm Lewis Silkin LLP and the British Athletes Commission (BAC) have today announced a partnership that will see Lewis Silkin provide market-leading legal advice to the BAC and its members.

The BAC is the members’ association which looks after the interests of elite athletes who have represented their country across a wide range of sports (including all Olympic and Paralympic sports), both while they are competing and after their retirement.

Renowned for its industry expertise, professionalism and straightforward approach, Lewis Silkin works with some of the world’s best known and most innovative sports brands and organisations. The firm’s expertise spans the entire spectrum of the sports industry and includes specialisms in sponsorship, brand management and employment law.

As a ‘BAC Supporter’, Lewis Silkin will provide legal advice and expertise to the BAC on general commercial issues, sponsorship, and reviews of policies, processes and appeals which impact the members.

In addition, the BAC will be able to refer athletes to Lewis Silkin for advice on a range of legal issues, from disciplinary processes and selection disputes to contractual disputes with a sponsor or agent. The Lewis Silkin team will also provide helpful legal advice and tips for members via the BAC’s website.

Alex Kelham, Senior Associate in the Sports Group at Lewis Silkin and former Commonwealth Games gold medal-winning swimmer, commented:

We are delighted to be able to work with the BAC and help support athletes who are competing at the top level for Great Britain. The general perception of our top athletes is of professional sportspeople surrounded by an entourage of advisors and sponsors, but sadly this reflects a tiny proportion of the BAC membership and the vast majority are dedicating their lives for very small financial reward. By partnering with the BAC we’re proud to contribute in a small way to helping these athletes get the support they need and deserve".

Our experience in this sector means that we are well aware of the stresses and strains involved in elite sport and understand the needs of athletes. If our expertise can help smooth over any potential issues which could otherwise distract athletes from their performance, we will have achieved our aim.”

Ian Braid, CEO of the BAC, added:

This announcement represents the start of a very exciting partnership between the BAC and Lewis Silkin. It is crucial for the BAC and our members to have access to legal advice from lawyers who really understand the sports sector and the challenges faced by elite athletes. Lewis Silkin ticks all of these boxes and we are proud to be able to have access to their innovative services and expertise for the BAC as an organisation and our members.”
