I am a European and UK Chartered Patent Attorney specialising in the mechanical field. I draft and prosecute patent applications across many technology areas including beverage dispense and packaging technology, automotive and aerospace engineering, building materials and medical devices.
As a jack-of-all-trades I have also turned my hand to software, beverage formulation, control systems and many other varied fields during my career.
Having studied an unconventional "product development" degree to honours level in my home country of New Zealand, I entered the IP profession in 1996 as understudy to the most successful single-person practice in the country, qualifying as a NZ/AU patent and trade mark attorney in 2000. In search of adventure, I then moved to the UK and joined a long established firm of patent and trade mark attorneys in London in 2002. Acquiring a family in the meantime, in 2017 I returned home to New Zealand and spent a year working with the top NZ patent firm and a medical devices client before moving back to the UK in 2018. I rejoined the same UK firm I had left a year earlier but, in 2022, following the firm's acquisition, was pleased to be welcomed by Lewis Silkin.
Representing a wide range of clients from the UK and around the world in prosecution and hearings before the European Patent Office, I have developed a particular interest in the green technology sector and renewable energy production. My continued enjoyment as a patent attorney comes from interaction with inventors during the drafting process and pitting wills against examiners and opponents in later stages of a patent's life. I also have particular experience advising on effective ways of protecting and enforcing designs under UK and European registration systems.
