Lewis Silkin has advised Equipmake Holdings, the UK-based engineering specialist pioneering the development and production of electrification products across automotive and aerospace industries, on a licensing deal with Sona Comstar, a global automotive systems and components manufacturer, headquartered in India.

The agreement will see Equipmake license elements of its patented spoke motor and inverter technology to Sona Comstar for applications in electric cars, buses, commercial vehicles and off-road vehicles in India, Thailand and other South Asian countries.

Under the agreement, Sona Comstar will pay Equipmake a fixed one-time licence fee together with running royalties on the products manufactured under licence and sold by Sona Comstar.

The Lewis Silkin team was led by Simon Entwistle, a partner in our Digital, Commerce & Creative team, with support from Emily Stirling, an associate in the same team and from Namita Viswanath, an IP partner at Indus Law in Bangalore.

Commenting on the deal, Lewis Silkin’s Simon Entwistle said:

"It was a pleasure working with Ian and the Equipmake team on this deal. This is an important development for Equipmake, and we look forward to watching them go from strength to strength."

Commenting on the deal, Equipmake's CEO, Ian Foley said:

"The licensing Agreement with Sona Comstar provides a material gear change for our business and opens new and strategic markets for Equipmake which would otherwise be inaccessible. The Lewis Silkin team proved a trusted advisor throughout the process - their high-quality advice and deep sector knowledge made the process as seamless as possible."
