China’s data protection regime is in a period of change, with significant transition and new law in recent years. China’s Personal Information Protection Law (PIPL) came into effect on 1 November 2021 and is China’s first comprehensive data protection law. It has potentially extra-territorial effect and is relevant to many businesses that perhaps don’t know it!
Join Lewis Silkin’s Co-Head of Data & Privacy, Alexander Milner-Smith, alongside Linda Qiao, Head of Rajah & Tann’s Shanghai Representative Office, as they discuss:
- The basics of PIPL.
- Who is impacted? Does it apply extraterritorially?
- How does PIPL restrict cross-border transfers?
- Recent developments in China’s data protection laws, including recently released guidance on the cross-border transfer of personal information.
