My principal role is to make sure that Lewis Silkin’s real estate lawyers are up to date with new and expected legal developments, with current good practice and are able to provide the best service to the firm’s clients.
Having advised clients for nearly 40 years, for most of the time as a partner in substantial law firms and more recently for 15 years as counsel in a major US firm, on a wide variety of real estate transactions and issues, I also continue to work on client matters.
I review and assess, as I have throughout my professional life, the practical implications of new real estate cases and legislation, including developments in other areas impacting on real estate activities, such as tax and construction, and consider the new policies, guidance and compliance issues relevant to real estate that emerge from governmental, tax and registration authorities; I then alert our lawyers appropriately with updates and guidance.
My role includes managing and contributing to the real estate training programme, and our bank of standard transaction documents (drawing on experience preparing such documents for my previous firms and for clients). I am also regularly consulted by colleagues for advice and suggestions as to practical solutions to legal, structuring or compliance issues. What I now do is based on the experience gained from very many years spent considering how best to provide the help that clients want and need, and very enjoyable it is too.
I also continue to advise some clients directly – a recent example being assisting insolvency practitioners as LPA receivers in the sale of two London properties owned by a company also in liquidation.
