I work in the Lewissilkinhouse team. I have practised employment law for over 20 years, so it perhaps goes without saying that I have a pretty comprehensive knowledge of, and a wealth of practical experience in, most aspects of employment law: from recruitment, management during employment, to termination.

My focus is on advisory and contentious matters - advising on the many issues that can arise during, and at the end of, an employment relationship. I have particular experience of Employment Tribunal litigation, as well as other forms of dispute resolution, including mediation, (both workplace and post-termination).

I generally act for employers, and my clients come from a variety of sectors, including technology, energy, retail, financial services, professional services and the voluntary sector. I have considerable experience of advising US-based clients on the employment law aspects of their UK operations, and, since joining the Lewissilkinhouse team (in July 2013), I have worked on a number of assignments as part of the in-house employment law team of a global energy company.

Employment

As well as advising on day-to day employment issues, I have particular experience of complex disputes (often including whistleblowing or discrimination allegations) - whether these arise during an employment relationship or after it has ended.

Examples include:

  • defending an employer against disability discrimination claims (ex-employee argued for “loss of career” compensation). Case settled (for a fraction of the claim) before Tribunal hearing
  • investigating a high value, commission-based, grievance. Dispute resolved following my report and recommendations
  • resolving (via mediation) a continuing employee’s discrimination claims (including maternity discrimination claims), resulting in the employer retaining an employee, and the employee returning to work. Since her return, the employee has achieved promotion
